This is a tradition of our church that has survived a change in location and an annual change in actors but has retained its script, costumes and props. It was originally presented in the church but the audience outgrew the pews and is now presented in the theatre auditorium of Rectory School.
The original script is unchanged but it has added a bell choir and individual musicians, depending on the available talent. One year some of the parts were filled by adults but usually there are enough children to fill the roles. There is a heirarchy in the assignment of roles where the youngest are angels and shepherds sporting. spakle blush, tinsel haloes and villanous burnt cork beards. They graduate to singing animals who vary in number depending on the demand and then to the key solos of kings, Herod, priests and finally to Mary, Joseph and Gabriel. All the students know the roles and the “rites” of passage and actively participate in selecting their costume, rehearsing their songs, getting their makeup and celebrating Jesus’ birth with cake after the performance! |
