St. Nicholas Fair

St. Nicholas Fair

Chairpersons Dayna and Lisa
The St. Nicholas Fair is the December bonding experience for our Church Community.
It starts months earlier when work groups form, chair persons and workers sign up and creative juices flow.

A craft group meets to create coasters, decorations and other items to sell. Knitters start pearling out mittens, hats and shawls. Jellies, jams and chutneys are cooked up and bottled. White narcissus bulbs are planted and carefully nurtured.
Bottles are filled with enticing candies and hair ornaments . Local businesses are solicited for donations to the Silent Auction. Sign up for wreaths and poinsettias are pre-sold. Basket donations are sought and donated.

The Bakers
The week before, the pre-signed up bakers are meeting and preparing hundreds of pans of cinnamon rolls and cardamom bread that have already been requested.
The wreaths and swags are hung, the electric candles arranged.

Chicken Salad Luncheon
The night before : all hands on deck! The tables are set up with Christmas cloths for the luncheon and the pre-roasted chickens are delivered and dismembered for the chicken salad. The bottle board ( favorite of all the Parish kids and teens) is set up and the crafts and games for visiting kids are arranged.  The jewelry has been priced and arranged, the other items are priced and organized, silent auction items are labelled and displayed.

Delicious slabs of cheese are cut and wrapped, hand made chocolate is tempting chocaholics as lollipops and santas and wreaths are decorated with bows.

St. Nicholas Fair Doors Open

St Nicholas appears in his white beard and purple robe and our vicar leads a benediction. We are ready.

The doors open and we are mobbed!  Teens run the games for kids downstairs and find time to play the bottle booth.  Other teens serve the luncheon. People buy, sign up for the Silent Auction, stay for lunch, socialize, watch their bids and re-bid. Maybe we have a carol sing.
Four hours later we close the auction after last minute bid-offs, announce the basket drawing winners, the silent auction winners, allow last minute shoppers to find a bargain and then clear it all away.
Another great St Nicholas Fair! Start to plan for next year.
